Wisdomantics DVD Board Game Review

Thanks to FlyBy Promotions, I had the opportunity to review "Wisdomantics", an interactive DVD board game. I really do not like posting less than positive reviews, but I am going to be honest and tell you up front that this game was not a good fit for my family. In all fairness, between the time I received the game and the time this review was due to be posted, I had 2 days in which to play and review the game and during those two days my family was (and still is) suffering from the flu. Please take the time to read my review though, as it could turn out to be the "best game ever" for you and yours!

About the game:
Requires 2-4 players, ages 12 and up.

Wisdomantics is an interactive DVD board game that helps test your knowledge of King Solomon's proverbs, utilizing the New King James Version of the Bible and can be played by followers of various faiths. The game consists of 2 interactive DVDs (double-sided) containing 400 questions, score cards, blessing cards, advancement cards, colored tiles, the game board, and directions, game piece, and question card.

Directions on how to play the game can also be found on their website here

Learn more about the game by watching the video here:

What we thought about the game:

My six year old seemed to enjoy the game more than the rest of us but even he did not like the voice of "King Solomon". I knew ahead of time that the game was the NEW King James Version, rather than the KJV that we use so some of the verses were a bit different as we knew them. That really did not seem to be too much of an issue. There was an error in the wording of one of the questions (incorrectly inserting the word "the" before the word we were supposed to fill in) which caused us all to incorrectly guess the answer. Another thing none of us liked was that the arrows did not line up with the choices of A,B,C,D as pictured below.

This just made it a bit confusing as we kept wanting to press the wrong arrow at times.
I did like that the game pieces were bigger and easy to handle to move around the board and it was exciting to be competitive trying to get the colored tiles in order to be the first to complete the temple score card. The RESTORATION and GRACE/MERCY cards were a nice aspect to the game as were the "blessing" cards. I found myself thinking of my blessings each time I took one of the cards. It was certainly a blessing being able to sit around with my kids playing a game, laughing and enjoying our time together. (We were laughing because King Solomon reminded us of one of the FP Rescue Heroes.) Even though the game is intended for 12+, if a child can read and knows scripture, he can play.

I prefer games that don't take forever to play, and this game just seemed drawn out to me but if you enjoy longer games (such as Monolopy) then you may enjoy this one. The next time we play, we may forgo the actual board part of the game and just use a tally sheet to keep score while using the DVD with the Bible verses.

All in all, really, a game that reinforces learning the Word of God and hiding His word in one's heart can never really be a waste of time. I cannot put my finger on exactly what it is causing this to be a bad fit for us, but I think it is just several things put together. We would really enjoy it if actual trivia questions were mixed in with the Bible verses. I do definitely recommend visiting www.wisdomantics.com and checking the game out for yourself. You may just have a new family game night favorite!

*I apologize for the lack of game play photos but considering we are all ill, none of us were exactly "camera ready".

Angels4Epilepsy, Inc. & ASTHMA TOO- An interview with Danielle & iTunes GIVEAWAY!

Many of you have read my previous posts about my cousin's charity, Angels4Epilepsy, Inc. Earlier this year, "& Asthma Too" was added to the name of the organization in recognition of my little cousin Danielle, who has asthma.

Meet 7 year old Danielle:

Hundreds of children with asthma and epilepsy have received gift bags containing various items such as stuffed animals, medical bracelets, books, and more through the work of Danielle, Jamie, and other Angels4Epilepsy, Inc. & Asthma Too volunteers. Danielle loves to make others happy, and has a very giving heart. In the future, she would like to make a greater impact with children who have asthma. I would like to dedicate this post to her and to help all of you get to know her better! (Danielle and I have a little giveaway for readers to enter after her interview. )

About Danielle, written by her mother Judy:

"Danielle was born in 2007 in Honolulu, Hawaii and had to be taken via emergency c-section due to placenta previa and no amniotic fluid.  She had trouble breathing and was immediately taken away upon birth and kept in the NICU for 10 days.
Right before her first birthday in 2008, she had her first asthma attack.  On Halloween 2008, she contracted a cold while trick or treating that landed her in the hospital for the first time.  She was given too much albuterol at the Army hospital in Augusta, Georgia while waiting to be transported to Savannah.  The transport team gave her too much IV fluid to lower her heart rate and by the time she arrived at the Children's Hospital of Savannah, her lung was collapsing and her heart and lungs were saturated.  They intubated her and told us to expect the worse as they had no idea why she crashed so rapidly and didn't know how to treat her.  Every specialist was called in to examine her but nothing turned up.  She had a bronchoscopy which is a procedure during which an examiner uses a viewing tube to evaluate a patient's lung and airways including the voice box and vocal cord, trachea, and many branches of bronchi. Bronchoscopy is usually performed by a pulmonologist or a thoracic surgeon. Although a bronchoscope does not allow for direct viewing and inspection of the lung tissue itself, samples of the lung tissue can be biopsied through the bronchoscope for examination in the laboratory.  Nothing turned up from that.  After seven days, she pulled out of it and the doctors had no idea why or how.
After that, every cold she contracted resulted in hospitalizations and since her sister kept bringing home colds, I decided to homeschool.  Danielle has been hospitalized and/or trips to the ER over 20 times.  Her last cold was November 2012 that only required several trips to the doctor and one trip to the ER.  It was the second time she did not require a hospitalization.  The key to keeping her out of the hospital was receiving the rescue medication in the form of predisone which is a steriod.  Her pulmonologist also feels she will continue to fight colds better as she grows and her lungs develop.  She does react to the seasonal changes with red eyes and stuffed/runny noses but it does not affect her breathing."

(Please continuing reading! The giveaway is after the interview. )

My interview with Danielle:

How long have you had asthma?.
Right before I turned one in June 2008

What is the scariest part of having asthma?
When I get sick, I probably will have to go to the hospital and get poked with needles.

How do you deal with being scared?
Sometimes when I cry, it helps.  It has been awhile since I was last sick with a cold.

What kind of things cause you to have an asthma attack?
Colds, cigarette smoke and dog and cat fur.

What happens to you when you have an asthma attack?
When I get a cold my nose runs, my eyes water and I have trouble breathing.  I get a bad cough.

Do you take medicine to prevent attacks and to help control your asthma?
Yes, I take daily doses of Flovent and Singulair.  When I have an attack, my mom gives me a steroid and albuterol.

How long do your asthma attacks last?
The attacks usually are immediate but the effects can last for a couple of months. My mom has to give me albuterol every four hours for as long as the cold lasts.

Because you have to stay away from people who are sick, is this hard for you?

Do you feel you miss out on a lot of things?
Yes. I don't get to go to school and I sometimes don't get to go to things if there are sick people there. I also have to walk by people who are smoking fast as it causes my breathing problems.

If you didn't have asthma, what is one thing you would do or go?

What do you want to be when you grow up?
I want to be a author. (Danielle wants to write a book about her own experiences with asthma!)

Biggest pet peeves?
People smoking in public places and those who are sick not caring if they contaminate others.

What is your favorite food?
My favorite food is cheese cake
My favorite color is light blue.
My favorite hobby is writing storys.
My favorite animal is a puppy.
My favorite movie is Mr. Magorium's Magical Wonder Emporium.
My favorite toy is Barbie.
My favorite song is Shake It Off by Taylor Swift.

I want to thank Danielle for letting me feature her on my blog. Having asthma is not fun, yet she has not let it get her down. She constantly has to be aware of her surroundings in order to keep her asthma under control. Having asthma myself, I know how difficult this can be. Just walking past the perfume counter in a department store or getting a whiff of cigarette smoke can cause me to have to immediately use my rescue inhaler. Many people don't realize how serious asthma can be but if not managed properly, it can lead to death. Asthma is actually the third leading cause of hospitalization in children under 15. Learn more about these facts and others at www.lung.org.

Visit www.angels4epilepsy.org for more information about this wonderful charity that delivers smiles to kids!

Now for the giveaway! Danielle and I would like to give my readers a chance to win a $10 iTunes e-gift card to download Taylor Swift's "Shake it Off" or any other songs of your choice! Please enter by using the Rafflecopter form below!

It's Giving Tuesday!

Today is Giving Tuesday, a day dedicated to giving back. What better way to start off this season of gift giving than by taking the time today to donate to your favorite charity?

One of my own favorite charities is my cousin's non-profit, Angels4Epilepsy, Inc. & Asthma Too. Thanks to Amazon Smile, I can support them every time I shop Amazon and purchase any of the tens of millions of AmazonSmile eligible products. When I do this, Angels4Epilepsy receives 0.5% of the purchase price. While this may not seem like much, it does add up.

Whether you support Angels4Epilepsy by signing up for AmazonSmile and selecting this charity to support or you simply donate to their cause, your gift can be a tremendous help! ALL donations go to purchasing items for gift packages for children with asthma and epilepsy and the postage cost to send these packages.

Regardless of what charity you choose to support on Giving Tuesday, or throughout the year, make sure you do your homework. To learn more about local and global charities and for tips on giving, visit Charity Navigator for more information. Smiley360 Nescafe with Coffee-Mate Review and Giveaway

Thanks to Smiley360, I had the opportunity to try out the new Nescafe with Coffee-Mate  Hazelnut flavor.

As you can see, the Nescafe with Coffee-Mate is very convenient! Perfect for those early mornings when you've just got to have coffee but forgot to program the coffee maker or are just in a rush. Simply add 2 tablespoonsful to a mug, add hot water, and stir.

I was pleasantly surprised by the balanced flavor as it had just the right amount of coffee and flavored creamer. It also wasn't bitter, or overly sweet. If you happen to be like me and enjoy hand-crafted coffee drinks, you can add hot chocolate mix or chocolate syrup to the hot coffee. I have even been known to drop in a caramel or a piece of peppermint candy for extra flavor. If you prefer iced coffee, mix and pour over ice. Prefer it creamier? Mix with milk and then pour over ice. The choices are endless!

Try new Nescafe with Coffee-Mate out for yourself. Click HERE for a $0.75 off coupon.

Enter the giveaway below for a chance to win a coupon for a FREE 12 oz. Nescafe with Coffee-Mate (Retail value up to $4.99). Three winners will be chosen. Giveaway open to U.S. only.

"Susie's Hope" DVD Review and Giveaway

Scroll down to enter the giveaway!

Susie's Hope is based on the true story of Donna Lawrence and Susie and how together they find love, hope, healing and forgiveness. Months before finding Susie left for dead in a local park, Donna herself was almost fatally wounded when attacked by a pit bull.

Meet Susie, the pit bull-mix who was found as a puppy beaten, burned, and left for dead. Her jaw was broken, she was missing teeth, and her ears were burned off. She is the reason for Susie's Law, in North Carolina, which authorizes convicted animal abusers to receive as much as 10 months in jail for their crimes.

Watch the trailer:

I have seen firsthand how well-behaved, gentle, and loving these breeds can be when raised with love and affection. Most often, it is when they are bred to be aggressive and raised with neglect and abuse that they have the potential to live up to their viscious reputations. This abuse is what led to Donna's horrific attack.

Their journey of recovery is an inspirational one and reminds me how much of a difference just one person can make. Susie's Hope brings much needed awareness to animal abuse and its long lasting effects.

Thanks to Donna, and the help of many others, Susie leads a full life and is now a trained therapy dog and also works with other burn victims. What began as tragedy turned into triumph!

The well-chosen cast includes actors such as Emmanuelle Vaugier (best known for playing "Mia" on Two and a Half Men), Burgess Jenkins (from Remember the Titans, Jon Provost ("Timmy" from Lassie) and several other notable actors and actresses.
The film has a Dove rating of 12+ due to some graphic scenes that may frighten young children. Overall, I thought this was a very good movie!

First Snow

Seems a bit strange to say we've had our first FALL snow of 2014, but we have! It's a really heavy snow good for packing so, in spite of the wind, several of the kids braved the cold to go out and play. The little ones didn't stay out for long, and I can't say I blame them. Thank goodness for our pellet stove and hot chocolate to help warm them up!

"Rumors of Wars" DVD Review

Rumors of Wars is a suspense-filled end of times movie starring such well-known names as Eric Roberts, Mac Powell (Third Day), Jaci Velasquez, and more. The story is about a young college woman named Roxy and her quest for answers as her world falls apart around her and an officer in the New World Army who comes across her journal years later in a post apocalypse society. While I am not a fan of converging storylines, the unexpected twists and turns were easy to follow and flowed fairly well.
I honestly was not too crazy about the ending as I felt like it was unfinished and needed more closure. Overall though, it was a good family film and I think that my husband will really enjoy watching it.
The film is Dove Family Approved with a PG-13 rating for violence (lots of guns, explosions and physical violence). There is also one instance of the word "hell" being used. It is currently available in DVD and Digital Download.

Watch the trailer:

Matthew 24:6 KJV

And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

Blog Makeover & Starbucks Giveaway

My son and I spent some time at Starbucks this weekend working on my blog. It was desperately in need of a makeover and I couldn't have done it without him or the Peppermint Mochas.  (What really happened was that he did the entire redesign with some input here and there from me.) He won't usually let me take a picture of him, so I was lucky to get this shot of him working away!

So, to thank you for your patience while my blog was under construction and to celebrate the new look, I am offering my readers a chance to win a $10 Starbucks e-gift card. Just enter using the Rafflecopter form below! Winner will be notified by email.

Chick-fil-A "Dress Up Your Nuggets" with an Asian Flair!

Recently, I became a member of the Chick-fil-A mom's club! I am very excited to be a part of this group and look forward to getting the inside scoop on Chick-fil-A exclusives and participating in special promotions.

One of those promotions is the current challenge, "Dress Up Your Nuggets". I will be honest, my absolute favorite way to eat chicken nuggets is to drench them in ketchup. I'm pretty sure that's not considered dressed up in most circles, so I decided to get creative!

We frequently eat Korean food, so the ingredients required were all things I already had on hand. All of the ingredients used (with the exception of the Chick-fil-A chicken nuggets) were purchased at my local grocery store and were reasonably priced.

Sticky Rice (I use jasmine rice)
Sheets of Seaweed (the type used for making sushi rolls)
Kimchi (I use chopped)
Rice Vinegar
Sesame Oil
Sriracha Sauce
Soy Sauce
Bulgogi Marinade
Chick-fil-A chicken nuggets (I used breaded nuggets, at room temperature)

Cook rice. How much rice you cook depends on how many chicken nuggets you want to serve. I used 1 rounded teaspoonful of rice for each nugget roll.
Season rice. For 1 CUP of rice, use 1/2 tsp Rice Vinegar and 1/2 tsp Sesame Oil. Mix well.

Cut seaweed into strips (width-wide). Mine were about 9"x2"

Add 1 chicken nugget (or 1/2 of a nugget)

Add a dash of Soy Sauce (not pictured)

My daughter loved the sriracha rolls but my favorite was the marinade drizzle. The soy sauce flavor was great as well. I wish I had bought more chicken nuggets than I did because I seriously want more!

Do you dress up your nuggets? I'd love to hear how!

**Clarification: Some of the photos picture a shorter strip of seaweed. These ended up being too short to roll up so I used the entire width of seaweed per roll.

New A&E Series DOGS OF WAR Premiering November 11

I recently had the opportunity to pre-screen the premier episode of A&E's DOGS OF WAR. Honestly, I thought it was something I wouldn't be very interested in because really, who needs yet another reality tv show? However, just minutes into the program, I felt myself being pulled in.

About the show:

'DOGS OF WAR spotlights combat veteran Jim Stanek, who returns home struggling with PTSD. He looks into getting a service dog to help him heal, only to discover how expensive they are, and how long the wait to be paired with one is. So he starts his own nonprofit to rescue dogs from kill shelters, train them as service dogs and partner them with struggling veterans at little or no cost.'

Jim Stanek really cares about the veterans he is trying to help and it shows. I love how his wife is involved with the program and how she sort of takes the spouses under her wing to help them regain control of their life as well. Seeing the service dog bond with the veteran and become part of the family is heartwarming. I think that this is one reality show worth watching!

The show premieres on A&E Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 10PM ET/PT and then moves to Sundays at 10PM ET/PT beginning Nov. 16.

Watch the trailer:

Thank you to ALL of our Veterans, past and present, for your service and sacrifice.

"Join me, and my family, and together let’s put Christ back into Christmas. We’ll dive head first into all of the joy, the dancing, the celebration, the feasting, the imagination and traditions that glorify the true reason for the season.” - Kirk Cameron

'This Christmas, have your family join with Kirk Cameron’s family and dive headfirst into all the joy, dancing, celebration, feasting, imagination, and traditions that glorify the true “reason for the season.” KIRK CAMERON’S SAVING CHRISTMAS is an engaging story that provides a biblical basis for our time-honored traditions and celebrations, and the inspiration to stand strongly against a culture that wants to trivialize and eliminate the faith elements of this holy season. So take in the splendor; take in the majesty; take in the story. Take it all in… and let’s put Christ back in Christmas! KIRK CAMERON’S SAVING CHRISTMAS is in theaters for a limited engagement beginning November 14 for two weeks only!' What I thought: When I first saw the movie poster, I thought it was going to be a comedy. While there are some funny scenes, the film is basically about a Scrooge type guy having a change of heart when he learns about the REAL meaning of some of the most popular symbols associated with the Christmas season. The holidays have become so commercial that it is sometimes difficult to not get bogged down by it all. While this is not one of the best movies I have ever seen, it is a great reminder that we need to embrace Christmas with joy! I love Kirk Cameron's films though and this one is no exception. This is a limited engagement showing so be sure to see if it's showing at a theater in your area.

I'm a Chick-fil-A Mom Ambassador! #ChickFilAMoms

This post is a bit late, but I am very excited to announce that I was recently chosen to be a Chick-fil-A mom ambassador!

Our local Chick-fil-a is awesome and I am looking forward to making it to some of the upcoming Family Nights that they host each Tuesday.

In the mean time, I'll be using my coupon this weekend to try out the iced coffee.
Thanks Mom's Club for the goodies!

What about you? Have any of you attended the Family Night at your local Chick-fil-A? I'd love to hear about it!
Have a great weekend!
