Zane Education - Review

Thanks to the Schoolhouse Review Crew, I was given a 12 month Gold Membership to Zane Education, for review purposes.

Zane Education, the first company to provide "The Missing Piece", provides on-demand subtitled videos, quizzes, lesson plans, and study tools. The addition of subtitles provides each child the option to read, as well as to watch or listen to each video presentation according to their learning style to provide the best learning outcome.

Aligned with State & National Standards, Zane Education currently provides online educational videos for 11 different subjects and more than 260 K-12 curriculum topics (over 1500+ videos!).
Subjects include:
Library Skills
Religious Studies
Social Studies

Video features include subtitles, online interactive quizzes, interactive study tools, lesson plans and The Study Center (which includes resources such as The World Fact Book). To receive the maximum benefit of membership, the Getting Started Guide as well as various User Guides are highly recommended and may be downloaded for FREE.

So, what do I think of my Gold Membership? I actually have mixed feelings about it. The video quality left much to be desired, in my opinion, as they are basically slide shows with the option to pause viewing. They appealed more to my pre-k/kindergarten student than they did, for the most part, to my older students. I also did not like some of the subject matter being offered. Since the company is secular, lessons are not taught from a Creation Science or Biblical Worldview, although they do offer for purchase a Christian Home Learning Guide which we were also provided for review. Besides quoting verses from versions other than the KJV, I appreciated having this guide to use in conjunction with our lessons.

Zane has an amazing selection of videos. No matter what you are studying, there is an excellent chance there will be an available video for it! Having the additional lesson material was also an added plus for me as well.

Bottom line? While I don't really care much for the "slide show" presentation, I like the concept and plan to continue incorporating the videos into our lesson plans. Due to the nature of some of the available videos, I do not plan on letting my students randomly browse through the subjects.

For those of you interested in purchasing a membership, Zane Education is offering an amazing discount through the end of August 2012! To receive a 35% discount on the purchase of any annual 12-month Gold, Silver, or Bronze membership subscriptions, simply add the code ZE398HSM to your shopping cart!

  • Gold Membership, which provides access to all 1500+ curriculum videos plus all the extras they have to offer for $17.99 per month/$197.89 per year.

  • Silver Membership, which provides access to all videos within a chosen GRADE LEVEL plus all the extras for $12.99 per month/$142.89 per year.

    Super Duper Publications HearBuilder Review

Super Duper Publications is a gold mine of fun, educational learning materials for children. They are currently offering FREE shipping for orders of $20 and over to USA & Canada.

As part of the Schoolhouse Review Crew, I received for review the HearBuilder Following Directions Software Program
HearBuilder is an interactive program which uses repetition and sequence to help students improve their auditory and following directions skills. At the same time, they work towards becoming Master Toy Makers while building their own Toy Central Factories.

    Students will learn to:

    • Follow increasingly difficult directions
    • Demonstrate knowledge of 40 basic concepts in five areas:
    Basic Directions
    Sequential Directions
    Quantitative & Spatial Directions
    Temporal Directions
    Conditional Directions

    Educators have the opportunity to:

    • Individualize each student program
    • Set levels of difficulty for each activity
    • Identify and print learning objectives for all levels
    • Add background noise at any level
    • Monitor progress and track data for an unlimited number of students
    • Track all relevant data
    • Customize and print reports
To get a feel for the program, you can try out the demo or watch the Show Me How video

Below are some of my screen shots of the program (my child's name has been replaced with "student's name"):

    Inside the factory
    Incorrect answer

    Program Completed!
    Master Toy Maker! Printable certificate.

What I thought about the software:

My son, who is 4, initially enjoyed playing it but after we moved some computers around, I needed him to play it on a different computer and he had to start over. THAT he did not enjoy. When played on the same computer, however, the student's progress is saved and they start up where they left off. Due to the fact that my son had to start over, he has not yet finished the program. I am also using the program with my 2 year old and she is doing surprisingly well on the first set of lessons on Basic Directions.

I like the repetition and introduction of sequence. These are skills that can be used in every day life as well. The graphics and colors are bright and appealing to children. The audio was a big hit with my daughter. When a child answers incorrectly, they are encouraged to "try again". In case they are not listening well enough or need reminded, there is an option to repeat the directions. Having access to Progress Reports was a hit with me because it gives me more of an idea of what skills we need to work more on. I also liked being able to choose what level I wanted my child to begin on (Play All, Beginner, Advanced, or Expert). This can only be set prior to beginning the program. It cannot be changed afterwards.

I did not like the amount of questions that had to be answered before completing some of the levels. I think I counted 100 questions in one of the levels. This is just too much for my son
and his learning style right now. He becomes easily frustrated when things are drawn out and once he has reached that point, he's done.

I completed the entire program myself, so I could see what all it entailed. Overall, I think for the most part it is a very useful program even though there are facets of it that do not work for us right now. I'm honestly not sure I would pay almost $70 for it, but they do have a great 30% off deal right now that would qualify for free shipping so I might consider that.

***HearBuilder Following Directions Home Edition normally retails for $69.95 but if you use Coupon Code BLGFD30 by 8/31/12, you can save 30% off the regular price!

If you have any questions, you can reach them via email at or call them at 1-800-277-8737. Visit for other ways to reach them.
Their 2012 Catalog can be requested and viewed here

If you have a child with special learning needs, check out their Super Duper Handy Handouts sections which contains articles pertaining to subjects such as Phonological Disorders, IEP Meetings, Using Constructive Criticism, and more!

I don't have an iPad, an iPod Touch or an iPhone (unfortunately for me), but if you are lucky enough to have one (I'm jealous), visit Super Duper Apps to see what is available in the iTunes App Store.

Bottom line? While costly, I think the program is very beneficial in teaching crucial listening skills and is presented in a fun way that most kids would most likely find engaging. I plan on continuing the program with both of my younger children!

    One of Those Kodak Moments

There are some moments that are just too special to be forgotten. Camera, or no camera, the mind's eye takes a picture and then embeds it into your heart. This past Sunday, while at church, I experienced one of those moments. It was funny, embarrassing, and sweet all rolled into one.

I was sitting at the piano, waiting to play for the offering. Our Pastor was talking, reminding the congregation of upcoming activities and prayer requests and out of the corner of my eye, I see my 2 year old and my 4 year old come out into the aisle from the pew where they were supposed to be sitting with their dad. My son returned to his seat. My daughter just kept moseying on up the aisle, with her baby doll tucked under her arm, until she reached the pulpit. Our Pastor then held his hand out to her to help her up the two stairs and once up, she proceeded to walk over to me and handed me her doll. Needless to say, everybody who could see what was going on was laughing and everybody else was trying to figure out what was so funny. I'm sure I turned 5 shades of red!

She is the first of my 5 children to ever do that. After church, my husband told me that she kept telling him, "I want Mama. I want Mama." I guess she just decided that she was going to get her mama!

I'll never forget the sweet, innocent look on her face as she was walking towards me. It was also touching hearing my Pastor pause in mid-sentence and watching her take his hand with her chubby 2 year old fingers while he helped her up the steps. Yep...this was definitely a moment!

Apologia - Who Is My Neighbor? (Review)

Over the past few weeks, I have been reviewing the Who Is My Neighbor?  curriculum set, by Apologia. This book is the third volume of the What We Believe series "designed to help children learn to discern the truth by using God's Word as a lens through which to view the world around them." They learn to see things the way God sees them, and what it means to be the salt of the earth & the light of the world.

    What it is:

Who Is My Neighbor is a family-inclusive, biblical worldview study for children ages 6-14 in which they are taught the basic truths of the Christian faith through engaging stories, notebooking assignments, and Bible study. In this multi-grade curriculum, they learn about Servanthood and how as Christians, it is something we have the privilege of doing because He saved us. There are always opportunities to serve! We just need to have an attitude adjustment of the heart and learn to take joy and delight in the serving of others.

While we just finished Lesson 1, I have enjoyed reading ahead and learning more about Servanthood myself. One of my favorite things that I have come across so far has to do with how PARENTS serve their CHILDREN:

P - Provide for their children
A - Appreciate and love their children
R - Reprove and discipline their children
    E - Encourage their children
N - Never aggravate or discourage their children
T - Teach and train their children
S - Set a Godly example for their children

I know this is intended for ages 6-14, but I have used this (with slight modification) with my 4 year old. I also think the text book could be used past the age of 14 as well. This curriculum combines Bible study, history, language arts, reading comprehension skills, and more all in one and I LOVE it!

The only thing I am not crazy about (and I've said this before), is that the verses quoted are from versions other than the KJV Bible. This isn't a huge deal, as I just skip over the verses in the book and read them straight from our KJV Bible. In the Introduction, this is even addressed! It is stated that the Bible verses in each lesson are taken primarily from the New International Version, the New Living Translation, and also some from the New Century Version (which I had never heard of). They recommend that your child use your family's preferred translation for the purpose of memorizing selected passages.

The Apologia website also offers additional resources to help teach this course in the form of 8 PDF files. Access to these files requires a password which is provided in the textbook that you purchase.

The following is just part of a sample lesson plan, based on a schedule of 3 weeks per lesson, 2 days per week:

    WEEK 1
Day 1: Read "The Big Idea" and "What You Will Do"
Read the Short Story and discuss
Discuss the questions in "Think About It"

Day 2: Study "Words You Need to Know"
Memorize "Hide It in Your Heart" verses
Read sidebar articles and do activities
Write or draw in notebook about what was studied

    WEEK 2
Day 3: Read and discuss first half of the main lesson
Notebook the "Make a Note of It" activities
Write or draw in notebook about what was studied

If I were using this with an older child, I would find that lesson plan very accommodating. Using it with a younger child, however, required a little flexibility and patience.

A glimpse into OUR Week 1 lessons:

We began by reading "The Big Idea" and the associated Bible verses from our Bible and took a few minutes to discuss what we read. I summarized parts of it, but made sure to give Mr. B the main idea. Then we talked about the "What You Will Do" section. This also involved a mini vocab lesson for words like depend, recognize, and confidence.

After a bit of a break, we read the "Short Story". I had to summarize a bit here as well and rather than discussing the story after we read it, we discussed it while we were reading it. I had to explain a few words to Mr. B. and he stopped me a few times to ask questions about the story but I thought that was WONDERFUL as I knew he was listening and interested! We also talked about the "Think About It" questions while reading the story, instead of after which I think was a good thing because by the time I was finished reading, Mr. B. was starting to get a bit antsy. I thought about letting him color in the coloring book while I was reading the story to him, but I was afraid it would distract him too much. He did enjoy coloring with his sister afterwards though. Next lesson, I may try letting him color during the reading and see how he does. The coloring book is a great tool, but I found the pictures to be kind of random rather than in any kind of order corresponding to the lessons.

Day 2 we briefly touched on "Words to Know" and began working on the memory verses for this lesson. We also looked through the lesson at the side bar pictures and talked about them and worked on the first few pages of the Notebook Journal. We are a family that frequently utilizes lapbooking and journaling, so I was thrilled to receive this not-your-run-of-the-mill Notebooking

Bottom Line? I love Who Is My Neighbor and look forward to using this curriculum set in the months (and years) ahead. It is a goldmine of information!

If you have any questions, or would just like more information, you can contact Apologia by calling 765-608-3280; emailing them at; and by visiting them at You can also find them on FACEBOOK!

    Professor B Review

    categories: , , ,

The Professor B math program, authored by Everard Barrett, has a 30 year history of achievement with research proven results. The idea is to have a thoroughly structured content with a developmental, contextual flow that allows children's minds to assimilate math in the same way they assimilate a story. This helps to close any gaps in their knowledge, while the truth telling in arithmetic helps the student to thoroughly understand and retain what they have learned.

The Professor B math program can be started with children as young as 3 years old. I used the program with my 4 year old and one of my 12 year old twins, who is in 7th grade. I'm not very fond of math (especially teaching it) but one of the great things about this program is that you don't need to know math to teach it. If you can read, you can become an Instant Master Teacher of math which gives you the option of having an older sibling, friend, or grandparent fill in and teach if you can't.

The lessons vary from 10 to 45 minutes depending on the age of the child. The younger the child, the shorter the lesson. Our Level 1 lessons ran about 10-15 minutes but my son lost interest after about 6-8 minutes. I think the main reason for this is that the lessons have no sounds and the bee does not speak. This was an intentional decision as they state that this is a "teaching program" and not a game. This is probably "the" main reason why I think this program is just not for us. My son is hardly ever on the computer, except when we play educational games together, so it was not that he was used to fancy graphics and audio. I think it just has more to do with the fact that right now, he needs the extra stimulation to hold his attention so that he can learn what is being taught. The lack of audio might be very beneficial to other families though! Especially, if being used with a student who cannot tolerate much distraction and needs help focusing on the task at hand.

As far as my 12 year old is concerned, even in Level 3 she found the program a bit too easy, and not challenging enough. She was finding herself going over some of the same lessons she had learned in 4th grade. She is also not the type of learner to have somebody sitting next to her or hanging over her shoulder so this program did not work for her independent learning style either. I, myself, found it difficult to devote 100% to teaching the lesson while at the same time having to tend to my 2 smaller children.

One of the great things about Professor B Math is that the program covers 3 YEARS of math in 1 year. It amazes me that by using this technique that it is possible for a child to accomplish something like learning to read whole numbers up to hundreds of trillions and instantly name the place value of each digit in first grade or to master multiplication facts & long division by second grade. I've never heard of any other program like this and I hope that in the near future my son will come to enjoy the program more!

Watch a SAMPLE LESSON  or Sign Up for a FREE 30-Day Trial by calling 678-765-6655

Professor B Math offers a month-to-month, pay as you go, subscription plan for individuals as well as a 1-year contract. **Update on pricing: From Professor B- "We also have a new price change on our yearly subscription.  Our program can now be purchase for $100 for 3 years access to each level. Our IT department is working on changing the site.  However, if the customers call 678-765-6655 we will be able take their order and honor the new price."

So, what does each level include?
LEVEL I Pre-k though 2nd graders and remediation of older learners. Introduction to Addition/Subtraction Facts - Counting to One Hundred - Lower Addition and Subtraction - Higher Addition and Subtraction - Place Value Fractional Parts & Order - Time - Money
LEVEL II 3rd grade through 5th grade and remediation of older learners. Multiplication/Division Facts and Problem Solving - Introduction to Fractions - Fractional Equivalence - Addition and Subtraction Fractions
LEVEL III 6th through 8th grades and remediation of older learners. Multiplication/Division of Fractions - Decimals - Percents

Placement tests are offered and can be found by clicking on the "E-learning" button and then scrolling down to the bottom of the page, on the right-hand side.

Certificates are also available to print out upon level completion. I think this is a great option, as my children usually like to have their accomplishments recognized in some way!

    Family Reunion in Vincennes

My daughter & niece at the George Rogers Clark Memorial in Vincennes, Indiana.

This past weekend, the kids and I traveled the 200+ mile journey to my father's hometown of Vincennes, Indiana for a Joyce family reunion. After the potty breaks, stopping for food, a piece of metal falling off the bottom of my van, getting caught in parade traffic and my littlest one throwing up on herself (because I gave her whole milk), the trip that would have taken about 4 & 1/2 hours by myself ended up lasting 6 & 1/2 hours with 5 kids. Actually, 6 if you count my niece riding with us the last hour or so. My Aunt's house never looked so good! I'm sure my parents thought so as well, as they were traveling in a vehicle with no air conditioning in 112 degree heat.

It had been 5 years since my last visit to Vincennes, and almost 15 years since I had seen some of my cousins. Sadly, a lot of the family couldn't make it to the reunion, but I really enjoyed spending time with those who could and looking at all the old pictures that they brought.

    A photo of my Grandparents

    Baby Girl was so hot!
My dad (on the right) with his twin brother (on the left), and 2 of their older brothers at the reunion.

I am very grateful to my cousin Debbie for letting all 7 of us take over her basement. The older kids had access to wi-fi, a Wii, a HUGE tv, and cable while the younger ones had a blast playing with dump trucks and dolls galore. The basement was also big enough for them to run around and expend some of their bound up energy! Even though I hadn't seen Debbie in over 14 years, she made us feel right at home, and I really appreciated that!
The kids enjoying some down time!

Luckily, the ride home went much smoother than the way there! There was a chance of scattered storms, but we only hit heavy rain for a few minutes while driving through Lawrenceburg, IN. While we had an enjoyable visit, it's true that "there's no place like home" and we were glad to be back. (I do have to say though that I'm looking forward to our next visit! Perhaps by myself next time?) :)

Winner of the Children's Training Bible Prize Pack Giveaway

Congratulations to Tracy B., the winner of the Children's Training Bible prize pack giveaway! Thank you to all who entered to win this great teaching tool!

    Happy 4th of July!

    Happy 4th of July!

I hope you all have a fabulous day! I'm not sure if we'll get to see any fireworks later or not, but for my daughter's sake, I  hope so. She LOVES fireworks! We are just hanging out around the house today, but will be spending the weekend with family and will celebrate more then.

**The cute little picture I had posted exceeded bandwidth on Photobucket from too many views. Boo. It was adorable!

How about you? What are your plans? Whatever they are, I hope you enjoy the day & stay safe!

Are you wondering how it's made yet?  It's easy and fun!  Fill up the eco-friendly bottle with normal tap water, you can chill it in the refrigerator first or use it straight from the tap.  Press the button for carbonation a few times, remove from the bottle from the machine and then add your favorite flavor.  You can add the amount of fizz and flavor you want and the best part, you reuse the bottle thus limiting trash.
