Ooka Island Reading Adventure Review

The Ooka Island Adventure is a downloadable reading program designed to teach young children how to read fluently and well. This is achieved by combining a state-of-the-art virtual world with the scientifically proven OokaMethod that builds literacy skills.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:

The program is designed for pre-K to 2nd grade, although I can see where it could be used under other circumstances as well for slightly higher grades.

After downloading the program and setting up an account, my son was able to customize his avatar (he chose a super hero disguise) before beginning his adventure with Zobot.

The adventure starts with 20 minutes of guided play where the adventurer follows Zobot around the island and participates in reading activities to earn the island currency, Ooka Mist.

The adventurer then finds and unlocks a new book in the Popcorn Library. After reading it twice, they have to complete comprehension activities before earning 8 minutes of free time to explore the island on their own. During this time, they can spend their Ooka Mist at the Mist Mart to purchase items to customize their avatar (my son's caped super hero is sporting some pretty sharp glasses) and Pencil Playground.

Next, the adventurer returns to guided play until level 24, when the game is complete.

My son, who is almost 4, LOVES this program! He repeatedly asks me if he can "do school". I think his favorite activity is Bubbly Trubbly, where he has to listen for sounds and pop the bubble of the corresponding sound. He also loves the Cake Factory where he can decorate cakes with letters. I was really surprised how much my son knew and how well he picked up on things he didn't. What makes it even better, because of the repetition of the game, he is retaining what he has learned from one session to another!

The Ooka Island book are available for purchase! To download and read sample books, click HERE. Download  motivational tools such as Book Paths, a reward certificate, as well as a reward book.

A couple things that I wish were different:

  • The file is VERY large, 2 GB, and took 1 & 1/2 hours to download on my new computer with high speed internet. It would be nice if the program came on a CD.
  • I had to download the program on my laptop, which uses a touch pad mouse so it is difficult for my son to play on his own. I am unable to download it to "his" computer because the file is too big.
Other than that, I have no complaints, and I am looking forward to continuing the Ooka Island Adventure with my son.
