90 Minutes in Heaven - Review

Thanks to FlyBy Promotions, I was given the chance to read the movie edition of 90 Minutes in Heaven, prior to the release of the movie on September 11, 2015. All I can say, is what an amazing story! I read all 245 pages almost in one sitting, it was that hard to put down.

The film is currently in theaters everywhere and is rated PG-13 for intense accident and injury images which might be disturbing to younger children. The movie, presented by Giving Films stars Hayden Christensen (you may know him from some of the Star Wars films), Kate Bosworth (Remember the Titans), Michael W. Smith, and even Dwight Yoakam.

The book, and film, is the story of Pastor Don Piper. On January 18, 1989, Pastor Don's car was hit and crushed by a semi truck while he was driving home from a church conference. The first rescue workers arriving at the scene declared him dead. A tarp was placed over his car. Ambulances were told to return to base- the coroner was needed, not a hospital. For 90 minutes, Don Piper's body was an empty shell while his soul was experiencing the joys of Heaven.

Another pastor, stuck in the traffic jam of the wreck, felt God's calling to go to this man and to pray for him. After 90 minutes of being declared dead, life returned to Don. He was a living miracle. The joy he felt being in Heaven was soon traded for pain and suffering. It was only with the love and support of praying friends and family that Don made it through one surgery and procedure after another and began to heal physically and to renew his faith in God. This is the Piper family's amazing story.

Love Inspired Series Book Review & Giveaway

I usually don't choose to read "romance" type novels, but when I was offered the chance to review 6 of the Love Inspired books from Harlequin, I decided to give them a chance.

These are the books that I received:

I have to admit, I found the titles a bit unimaginative, but that would be my only complaint about them. The paperbacks are the perfect size to hold and to tuck into a purse or bag, and at just over 200 pages they are an easy read. What I liked most about them is that they really were faith-based and wholesome! I wouldn't have any qualms at all about letting my teenage daughters or my mother read books from this series.

The above titles are available now until May 28th and are available for purchase HERE in paperback, large print, and eBook formats. Prices vary from $4.79 to $5.40, for single books, depending on format (prices subject to change).

*** Please note, this giveaway is open to the U.S. and Canada only. If you have won a prize from FlyBy/Propeller in the past 30 days or have won this same prize on another blog, you are not eligible to enter (these are the sponsor's rules).

Avengers- Age of Ultron in Theaters Tomorrow!

The wait seemed like forever, but it was well worth it! Marvel's Avengers Age of Ultron, hits theaters Friday, May 1.

Full of action and humor (and some unexpected surprises), Age of Ultron is definitely a must see! I was able to prescreen the film earlier this week with my son, and we both loved it. In his opinion, this one was better than the first. I think I like them both equally.

Look for two new characters- Quicksilver & the Scarlet Witch!

If I had to describe this movie in one word? AWESOME! In theaters tomorrow!

When Calls the Heart Season 2 Premiere April 25th

If you are one of the over 22 thousand #Hearties who watched season 1 last year on the Hallmark channel, then you are probably anxiously awaiting the TWO HOUR season 2 premiere taking place this Saturday, April 25th. I am pretty sure you will not be disappointed! If you happen to be like me and had no idea such a series even existed, I highly suggest becoming acquainted with When Calls the Heart, especially if you are a fan of Janette Oke's and inspirational fiction.

ABOUT THE SERIES:
The series is inspired by Janette Oke’s bestselling book series about the Canadian West. “When Calls the Heart” tells the captivating story of Elizabeth Thatcher (Erin Krakow), a young teacher accustomed to her high society life, who receives her first classroom assignment in Coal Valley, a small coal mining town where life is simple, but often fraught with challenges. Lori Loughlin plays Abigail Stanton, a wife and mother whose husband, the foreman of the mine, along with a dozen other miners, has just been killed in an explosion. The newly widowed women find their faith is tested when they must go to work in the mines to keep a roof over their heads. Elizabeth charms most everyone in Coal Valley, except Constable Jack Thornton (Daniel Lissing) who believes Thatcher’s wealthy father has doomed the lawman’s career by insisting he be assigned in town to protect the shipping magnate’s daughter. Living in a turn of the century coal town, Elizabeth will have to learn the ways of the frontier if she wishes to thrive in the rural west on her own.

While I have never read any of the author's books, nor had I seen season 1 of the series, I found the season 2 premiere easy and enjoyable to watch. I was thrilled to see Lori Loughlin and Jack Wagner and discovered some new favorites such as Erin Krakow and Daniel Lissing. I'm not going to give anything away, but I will say that the end of the premiere left me wanting more! Watch the premiere this Saturday to continue following the lives of the widows, Elizabeth and Jack (I found myself really rooting for them!), and the rest of the folks in Coal Valley.

gMovies Review, 2 Week FREE Trial, & Giveaway- Faith & Family Friendly Shows Right From Your Computer!

Not having cable, I am quite familiar with most streaming services but until recently, I had never even heard of gMovies.  If you aren't familiar with it either, read on! Actually, read on anyway so you can enter the giveaway! :) One lucky reader will win a 6 month subscription!

Want a 2 Week FREE trial?
and enter code: FREETRIAL85
(It will ask for credit card information, but once you enter the code and it is validated, you should be able to proceed without entering any of that!)

For $4.99 per month, you and your family can have instant access to faith & family friendly movies, tv series, documentaries, and animated kid's shows. Currently, gMovies has almost 300 shows to choose from and new titles are added each month.

I am very pleased with the quantity and quality of selections, especially for kids. Shows include Davey & Goliath, Junior's Giants, Pahappahooey Island, Friend's & Heroes and more! Genre's like comedy and thrillers have a smaller selection to watch, but the drama selection is amazing.

The site states that they also offer free gMovies mobile apps for both Apple and Android devices, but I found it was unavailable on my iPhone. In order to access it, I had to download it via iTunes and it is only accessible from an iPad. As of this writing, I have not tried to download the android version but will update this post once I do. Until then, I will just continue watching from my laptop.

I know it's silly, but the only thing I'm not crazy about (besides the app issue, that is) is that there is no "play" button. In order to watch the movie, you click on the words, "Watch Movie" located directly under the picture of the movie.

The video player used on the website is Adobe Flash Player based so it's important to run the latest version and streaming quality is best when internet download speed is 3.0 Mbps or greater.

Enter the giveaway for a chance to win a 6 month subscription to gMovies!

Roadmap Genesis- A Documentary Review

Roadmap Genesis, by film maker Nolan Lebovitz, is a documentary about the book of Genesis and how it's truths and values are still relevant in this day and age. After studying to learn more about the Bible and becoming a Rabbi, Mr. Lebovitz traveled the United States sharing his new found discoveries about the first book of the Bible and interviewing public figures and clergy. The interviews included in the documentary include those with former Gov. Mike Huckabee, Ken Ham of The Creation Museum and Answers in Genesis, the Archbishop of Chicago Cardinal Francis George and many others including people just like you and I.

There is no question that our society in general is on a downhill slide. Honesty, morality, love for others- all those seem to be becoming a thing of the past. Lebovitz believes that the answers found in Genesis can still be applied today and if put into practice, can make a change in our thoughts and actions and can help to make the world a better place in which to live and raise younger generations. The Bible can still be relevant to people of all faiths in this modern age in which we live.

Homeschool Planet Planner Review

Thanks to Home & School Mosaics and Homeschool Buyers Co-op I have had opportunity over the past few months to review Homeschool Planet. I have to say, this is THE most thorough planner I have ever used. There are so many things that I like about it that I really do not know where to begin.

For starters, take a video tour of the planner by watching the video below.

Some of my favorite things about this planner:

The ability to add multiple family members to the planner. I currently have 6 family members on the account. I love that I have the option to view each family member separately on the calendar, or to view all at once. That's not all though! Options can be filtered to include only certain classes and activities for each person. There is also the option to have a daily or weekly digest of student activities sent via email or text message. Several of us are not big on checking our email (and I have thousands of unread emails to attest to that fact- YIKES!) so having the option to send the digests via text is a major bonus! Also, I currently have 3 homeschool high schoolers. I tend to be a bit undisciplined when it comes to keeping track of everything that I need to as far as transcripts go. I've tried other programs but, for one reason or another, they just end up not working for my needs. Homeschool Planet is so simple to use, and everything from transcripts, to grades, to class hours and more, are all available at the touch of a button.

There are so many little touches to the planner that I've really become spoiled and cannot imagine using any other online planner. I really have a thing for widgets and my planner is full of them. Currently, I have the following widgets:

Message: This gives me the option to send a text message to anyone set up in my planner if their cell phone number is added. <3

Lookup: Gives me the option to search right from the planner!
Reference
Bible
Dictionary/Thesaurus
Movies
Recipes

Homeschool Buyers Co-op
Amazon

Bing

Daily Quote: Quote of the day- “My mind's my kingdom.Francis Quarles

Daily Bible Verse: Currently there are 18 different Bible versions to choose from. I really appreciate the fact that the KJV is one of these choices.

Shopping List: How cool is this!?! The list can either be printed out OR sent via text to anybody set up in the planner with an added cell phone number. This is one of those nice, extra added touches that I really appreciate. It is really convenient to be able to message one of the kids (or myself) as a reminder of supplies needed for certain assignments or projects. Everything is literally all in one place with this planner and it is so easy to keep organized and on top of things.

Weather: Great widget to have when planning outdoor activities or travel.

To Do: I always have way too many "to do" lists and inevitably, I end up losing a few. This way, I keep them all in one place and once again, there is the awesome option to text message the list.

The planner allows children to sign in separately, view their assignments, and check them off when completed. It also offers calendar sharing, lesson copying, automatic rescheduling of classes and assignments if not marked as completed, and SO MUCH MORE!

Currently, the planner does not really have a whole lot of "themes" or color options to choose from and that is one of the only things that I am not crazy about. I know that really is not a huge deal, so it's something I overlook because I love everything else about it. I will be thrilled if they add a few (or a ton) of new themes though. It would also be nice to have a Homeschool Planet app for smart phones. I have 3G on my iPhone and most of the time, I have issues when accessing any website when I'm not on wifi, but my apps work. So, that would be a nice option to have sometime in the future.

Wisdomantics DVD Board Game Review

WISDOMANTICS NKJV INTERACTIVE DVD BOARD GAME

Front of box

Back of box

Thanks to FlyBy Promotions, I had the opportunity to review "Wisdomantics", an interactive DVD board game. I really do not like posting less than positive reviews, but I am going to be honest and tell you up front that this game was not a good fit for my family. In all fairness, between the time I received the game and the time this review was due to be posted, I had 2 days in which to play and review the game and during those two days my family was (and still is) suffering from the flu. Please take the time to read my review though, as it could turn out to be the "best game ever" for you and yours!

About the game:
Requires 2-4 players, ages 12 and up.

Wisdomantics is an interactive DVD board game that helps test your knowledge of King Solomon's proverbs, utilizing the New King James Version of the Bible and can be played by followers of various faiths. The game consists of 2 interactive DVDs (double-sided) containing 400 questions, score cards, blessing cards, advancement cards, colored tiles, the game board, and directions, game piece, and question card.

Directions on how to play the game can also be found on their website here

Learn more about the game by watching the video here:

What we thought about the game:

My six year old seemed to enjoy the game more than the rest of us but even he did not like the voice of "King Solomon". I knew ahead of time that the game was the NEW King James Version, rather than the KJV that we use so some of the verses were a bit different as we knew them. That really did not seem to be too much of an issue. There was an error in the wording of one of the questions (incorrectly inserting the word "the" before the word we were supposed to fill in) which caused us all to incorrectly guess the answer. Another thing none of us liked was that the arrows did not line up with the choices of A,B,C,D as pictured below.

This just made it a bit confusing as we kept wanting to press the wrong arrow at times.
I did like that the game pieces were bigger and easy to handle to move around the board and it was exciting to be competitive trying to get the colored tiles in order to be the first to complete the temple score card. The RESTORATION and GRACE/MERCY cards were a nice aspect to the game as were the "blessing" cards. I found myself thinking of my blessings each time I took one of the cards. It was certainly a blessing being able to sit around with my kids playing a game, laughing and enjoying our time together. (We were laughing because King Solomon reminded us of one of the FP Rescue Heroes.) Even though the game is intended for 12+, if a child can read and knows scripture, he can play.

I prefer games that don't take forever to play, and this game just seemed drawn out to me but if you enjoy longer games (such as Monolopy) then you may enjoy this one. The next time we play, we may forgo the actual board part of the game and just use a tally sheet to keep score while using the DVD with the Bible verses.

All in all, really, a game that reinforces learning the Word of God and hiding His word in one's heart can never really be a waste of time. I cannot put my finger on exactly what it is causing this to be a bad fit for us, but I think it is just several things put together. We would really enjoy it if actual trivia questions were mixed in with the Bible verses. I do definitely recommend visiting www.wisdomantics.com and checking the game out for yourself. You may just have a new family game night favorite!

*I apologize for the lack of game play photos but considering we are all ill, none of us were exactly "camera ready".
