Miacademy Review

Hello! It has been quite some time since my last post, and for that I apologize. I was busy working on my degree and also suffering from multiple health issues that put me out of commission for awhile. I hope to be blogging again and hosting giveaways on a regular basis very soon but until then, I am very excited to be able to tell you of my experience with Miacademy

Miacademy came along at just the right time. It can be tough homeschooling through illness, but having access to a safe, online learning environment definitely filled in some gaps in our lessons. I know there are other programs out there, but none of them seemed to fill our needs completely enough. To be honest, this program was not a great fit with my recently turned 7 year old daughter who is in second grade and more of a "hands on" learner but totally fit the bill with my 9 year old third grader! Every time he plays, he discovers something else that he likes about Miacademy and not only that, he retains what he learns as well.

So many things about this learning community drew me in, but for the sake of time and space (YES! There are THAT many things that I love about Miacademy) I will just list a few of them. Most importantly to me, this is a SAFE site. While I always monitor my children when they are using the school computer located in the most central room in our house, it is impossible to be with them every second (especially when more than one child is being homeschooled at the same time). Moderators monitor the online community and keep an eye on everything. If something questionable comes along, it is not posted and a message is sent to the parent and student regarding the issue. For instance, in his personal description, my son mentioned that his hobbies included playing a popular game. I received a message informing me of the moderator's contact with my son and also an explanation stating "For safety reasons, we do not allow mention of other websites on our site..."  along with the message to contact them with any questions. I appreciate having the extra set of eyes, so to speak.

Another winning point, is that kids can learn at their own pace and each future challenge is based on their progress and previous challenge results. The one thing my son found very frustrating at first regarding the challenges was when he incorrectly answered a question and then had to start all over again from the beginning answering the exact same set of questions all over again. More than once it caused him to give up and move on to something else but eventually he ended up going back to master the lesson in the spirit of competition. Earning those gold coins to spend dressing up his avatar and buying things for his castle is great incentive for him. He also likes to see his ranking among other community members and says that the games make learning fun. Like I said, this style of learning is spot on for him and the offered rewards highly motivate him to want to learn more. The one thing he does not like is the computer's voice as he finds it highly annoying but if that is the only negative, that's not too bad, right?

Having access to the Parent's Premium account, I have been able to set goals for each child as well as to track their progress and assess their academic growth. The weekly email updates I receive are also helpful as they summarize each child's progress and makes it easy to see at a glance how many coins they have earned, how many messages they have, their pet status, and games played/prizes earned.

Below are several screenshots of my parent account. As you can see, with just a click of the mouse, learning levels, goals and assignments can be set and adjusted. I love this feature!

"Would a Worm Go on a Walk?"- Book Review

Currently priced at $12.79

It has been quite some time since I have done a review, but I am very glad that I was given the opportunity to check out "Would a Worm Go on A Walk?" by Hannah C. Hall. We absolutely loved this adorable book! The very first thing that caught my daughter's eye was the funny title along with the whimsical picture. "Worms don't wear shoes, mama, " my six year old said with a giggle. The next thing we noticed was the very detailed book jacket. Not only is it colorful and inviting, but some of the print is raised making it fun for children to run their fingers over. The silly story is a wonderful way to remind children of how much we are all loved by God and how He has made each of His creations special. My daughter actually teared up when I read the very last page that reads, "The ANIMALS were just a start. God's masterpiece is YOU!" She felt very special being compared to a masterpiece.

My daughter and I read books every night before she goes to sleep and I can tell already that this is one that will frequent her night stand. She also recently started reading, and had fun taking turns reading pages with me. Both the story and the fantastic illustrations brought great joy to her, and any book that can nurture a child's love of reading is a great book to have on hand!  This book would also make a wonderful gift.

About the book (from the author):

This hardcover book is 32 pages long and is intended for children ages 4-7.

“Would a worm go on a walk, if you could lead him down the street? / Would he wear his tiny tennies, if he had two worm-sized feet?”
So begins this humorous and imaginative picture book that introduces children to the idea that animals are uniquely created by a loving and wise God. Would a Worm Go on a Walk?, with its colorful, comical illustrations, is a fresh, fun way to teach young children that God created all things very good. He gave all the animals, and children, too, wonderful qualities and unique strengths. Children will giggle over the ridiculous scenarios presented, and they will come away with the knowledge that we all are loved and special.

90 Minutes in Heaven - Review

Thanks to FlyBy Promotions, I was given the chance to read the movie edition of 90 Minutes in Heaven, prior to the release of the movie on September 11, 2015. All I can say, is what an amazing story! I read all 245 pages almost in one sitting, it was that hard to put down.

The film is currently in theaters everywhere and is rated PG-13 for intense accident and injury images which might be disturbing to younger children. The movie, presented by Giving Films stars Hayden Christensen (you may know him from some of the Star Wars films), Kate Bosworth (Remember the Titans), Michael W. Smith, and even Dwight Yoakam.

The book, and film, is the story of Pastor Don Piper. On January 18, 1989, Pastor Don's car was hit and crushed by a semi truck while he was driving home from a church conference. The first rescue workers arriving at the scene declared him dead. A tarp was placed over his car. Ambulances were told to return to base- the coroner was needed, not a hospital. For 90 minutes, Don Piper's body was an empty shell while his soul was experiencing the joys of Heaven.

Another pastor, stuck in the traffic jam of the wreck, felt God's calling to go to this man and to pray for him. After 90 minutes of being declared dead, life returned to Don. He was a living miracle. The joy he felt being in Heaven was soon traded for pain and suffering. It was only with the love and support of praying friends and family that Don made it through one surgery and procedure after another and began to heal physically and to renew his faith in God. This is the Piper family's amazing story.

Love Inspired Series Book Review & Giveaway

I usually don't choose to read "romance" type novels, but when I was offered the chance to review 6 of the Love Inspired books from Harlequin, I decided to give them a chance.

These are the books that I received:

I have to admit, I found the titles a bit unimaginative, but that would be my only complaint about them. The paperbacks are the perfect size to hold and to tuck into a purse or bag, and at just over 200 pages they are an easy read. What I liked most about them is that they really were faith-based and wholesome! I wouldn't have any qualms at all about letting my teenage daughters or my mother read books from this series.

The above titles are available now until May 28th and are available for purchase HERE in paperback, large print, and eBook formats. Prices vary from $4.79 to $5.40, for single books, depending on format (prices subject to change).

Would you like a chance to win your own set of these inspirational romance books? Enter on the Rafflecopter form below.

*** Please note, this giveaway is open to the U.S. and Canada only. If you have won a prize from FlyBy/Propeller in the past 30 days or have won this same prize on another blog, you are not eligible to enter (these are the sponsor's rules).

Avengers- Age of Ultron in Theaters Tomorrow!

The wait seemed like forever, but it was well worth it! Marvel's Avengers Age of Ultron, hits theaters Friday, May 1.

Full of action and humor (and some unexpected surprises), Age of Ultron is definitely a must see! I was able to prescreen the film earlier this week with my son, and we both loved it. In his opinion, this one was better than the first. I think I like them both equally.

Look for two new characters- Quicksilver & the Scarlet Witch!

If I had to describe this movie in one word? AWESOME! In theaters tomorrow!

When Calls the Heart Season 2 Premiere April 25th

If you are one of the over 22 thousand #Hearties who watched season 1 last year on the Hallmark channel, then you are probably anxiously awaiting the TWO HOUR season 2 premiere taking place this Saturday, April 25th. I am pretty sure you will not be disappointed! If you happen to be like me and had no idea such a series even existed, I highly suggest becoming acquainted with When Calls the Heart, especially if you are a fan of Janette Oke's and inspirational fiction.

The series is inspired by Janette Oke’s bestselling book series about the Canadian West. “When Calls the Heart” tells the captivating story of Elizabeth Thatcher (Erin Krakow), a young teacher accustomed to her high society life, who receives her first classroom assignment in Coal Valley, a small coal mining town where life is simple, but often fraught with challenges. Lori Loughlin plays Abigail Stanton, a wife and mother whose husband, the foreman of the mine, along with a dozen other miners, has just been killed in an explosion. The newly widowed women find their faith is tested when they must go to work in the mines to keep a roof over their heads. Elizabeth charms most everyone in Coal Valley, except Constable Jack Thornton (Daniel Lissing) who believes Thatcher’s wealthy father has doomed the lawman’s career by insisting he be assigned in town to protect the shipping magnate’s daughter. Living in a turn of the century coal town, Elizabeth will have to learn the ways of the frontier if she wishes to thrive in the rural west on her own.

While I have never read any of the author's books, nor had I seen season 1 of the series, I found the season 2 premiere easy and enjoyable to watch. I was thrilled to see Lori Loughlin and Jack Wagner and discovered some new favorites such as Erin Krakow and Daniel Lissing. I'm not going to give anything away, but I will say that the end of the premiere left me wanting more! Watch the premiere this Saturday to continue following the lives of the widows, Elizabeth and Jack (I found myself really rooting for them!), and the rest of the folks in Coal Valley.

gMovies Review, 2 Week FREE Trial, & Giveaway- Faith & Family Friendly Shows Right From Your Computer!

Not having cable, I am quite familiar with most streaming services but until recently, I had never even heard of gMovies.  If you aren't familiar with it either, read on! Actually, read on anyway so you can enter the giveaway! :) One lucky reader will win a 6 month subscription!

Want a 2 Week FREE trial?
and enter code: FREETRIAL85
(It will ask for credit card information, but once you enter the code and it is validated, you should be able to proceed without entering any of that!)

For $4.99 per month, you and your family can have instant access to faith & family friendly movies, tv series, documentaries, and animated kid's shows. Currently, gMovies has almost 300 shows to choose from and new titles are added each month.

I am very pleased with the quantity and quality of selections, especially for kids. Shows include Davey & Goliath, Junior's Giants, Pahappahooey Island, Friend's & Heroes and more! Genre's like comedy and thrillers have a smaller selection to watch, but the drama selection is amazing.

The site states that they also offer free gMovies mobile apps for both Apple and Android devices, but I found it was unavailable on my iPhone. In order to access it, I had to download it via iTunes and it is only accessible from an iPad. As of this writing, I have not tried to download the android version but will update this post once I do. Until then, I will just continue watching from my laptop.

I know it's silly, but the only thing I'm not crazy about (besides the app issue, that is) is that there is no "play" button. In order to watch the movie, you click on the words, "Watch Movie" located directly under the picture of the movie.

The video player used on the website is Adobe Flash Player based so it's important to run the latest version and streaming quality is best when internet download speed is 3.0 Mbps or greater.

Enter the giveaway for a chance to win a 6 month subscription to gMovies!

Roadmap Genesis- A Documentary Review

Roadmap Genesis, by film maker Nolan Lebovitz, is a documentary about the book of Genesis and how it's truths and values are still relevant in this day and age. After studying to learn more about the Bible and becoming a Rabbi, Mr. Lebovitz traveled the United States sharing his new found discoveries about the first book of the Bible and interviewing public figures and clergy. The interviews included in the documentary include those with former Gov. Mike Huckabee, Ken Ham of The Creation Museum and Answers in Genesis, the Archbishop of Chicago Cardinal Francis George and many others including people just like you and I.

There is no question that our society in general is on a downhill slide. Honesty, morality, love for others- all those seem to be becoming a thing of the past. Lebovitz believes that the answers found in Genesis can still be applied today and if put into practice, can make a change in our thoughts and actions and can help to make the world a better place in which to live and raise younger generations. The Bible can still be relevant to people of all faiths in this modern age in which we live.
