Bardin & Marsee Publishing Waterproof Bible

Recently, Mosaic Reviews had the opportunity to review the Waterproof Bible published by Bardin & Marsee Publishing company.

The idea for such a bible originated from their desire to take the Word of God to all creation, extremes, and environments. They are totally waterproof, dry quickly, and are even made of synthetic materials that are much stronger than paper yet are usable with your basic ball point pen, pencil, or dry highlighter. Imagine being able to take your Bible with you WHEREVER you may go whether it's camping, climbing a mountain top, floating down the Amazon or sitting in a hot tub. I don't know about you, but I find that rather cool and I want one!

The Waterproof Bible is available in several color options in the
ESV, KJV, NIV, NKJV, and NLT translations (prices vary) but what really sets it apart are the awesome features:

  • Extremely durable synthetic pages that can go where you go, wherever that might be.
  • 100% worry free
  • Stain Resistant
  • Great for backpack, tote, or purse
  • Work great with dry highlighters
  • Allow you to easily write and underline passages
  • Have no Bleed Thru
  • And.... FLOATS!
The bibles are also available in New Testament, Psalms & Proverbs editions.

Personally, I plan on purchasing the KJV Waterproof Bible for my family to use but I think this would make the perfect graduation gift as well, especially for students going away to college and living in a dorm or for those who plan to travel!

Grace & Truths Books - Review

Photobucket

In what will be my last review for the Schoolhouse Review Crew, I would like to introduce to you Grace & Truth Books.

Grace & Truth Books is an online Christian bookstore that has been built around "what will glorify God, strengthen His people in their walk, and call all peoples to find joy in knowing His gospel and following him" rather than being based on "fancy packaging". They offer books on everything from Homemaking to Children's Books to DVDs & Videos  and much, much more. I was very pleased with the selections offered and the quality of those  items.

I was blessed to be chosen to review Raising Maidens of Virtue (Revised and Expanded Edition)by Stacy McDonald.
Photobucket
Hardback
$18.50

Raising Maidens of Virtue is a Bible study that aims at raising daughters to have a life that will honor God. In today's day and age, this is no easy feat. Darts and arrows are being thrown in every place and in every way towards the young woman of today. Temptations lurk beyond the corners. Having the opportunity to give my daughters the tools that they  will need in life to steer clear of things that will not allow them to walk a Godly path is very important to me which is why I feel blessed to have been able to review this selection.

Chapters include such topics as "Modern-Day Maidens", "Dwelling in Unity", "I Love Me, I Love Me Not", "A Knight in Shining Armour" and 16 others. The beginning of each chapter begins with a Bible verse and then follows the thought provoking story type devotion. They end with "Share Your Heart" which is all about delving deeper into the word of God and discussing in greater detail what was just read.

As there are several pages to read in order to study each chapter, it was easiest for me to read first and then let my daughter read it by herself and afterwards discuss what we had read. Sharing our thoughts and insights while reading and studying God's word is a wonderful thing to be able to do together. I like the length of each chapter. There's not so much to read that you can't take all of it in, yet there  is plenty of content that is presented in a way that really makes you want to read more. The questions and selected verses are perfect in that they help to instill the virtues that young women need today. Ones that they will fall back on while growing up to become women.

This has been one of my favorite books that I've had the opportunity to review! Visit www.graceandtruthbooks.com to learn more about this books and all the other that they offer!

Apologia: Journeys of Faithfulness Review

Photobucket

Photobucket

Journeys of Faithfulness by Sarah Clarkson is a book of stories of life and faith for young christian women ages 12 and up. This 232 page paperback book is available from Apologia for $13.00.

The book is divided into these four parts, with 3 chapters each:

Part one: Mary & Martha
Part two: Mary, Mother of Jesus
Part three: Esther
Part four: Ruth

You can view the entire contents here. A Sample Chapter of Mary & Martha, Chapter 1 Learning to See, is also available.

Each chapter contains stories of life & faith, a devotional, Bible study, and a Journey Journal.

I chose to read the entire book myself before reading it with my daughters. I read one chapter every other day but plan on reading one chapter a week with my daughters so we can have time to read the actual passage in the Bible, reflect on the devotions, and dig deep in God's word by studying the Bible verses given for each chapter. I love how several pages are included for journaling as well.

At first, I wasn't sure I would care much for fictional stories of Bible passages but once I started reading, I was drawn in. The author made each story come alive and as a reader, I almost felt that I was there, going back in time.

One of my favorite chapters is Chapter 12 of Part 4, which is about Ruth. I especially enjoyed reading "Desire of My Heart." Ruth is an excellent example of faithfulness and trusting in God to lead her where she needed to be. This book would make a wonderful addition to any home library!

Activity Bags- Review

Photobucket

These past several weeks, I've had the opportunity to review the following e-books from Activity Bags

Ages 3-6
e-book $15.00
Photobucket
Ages 3-6
e-book $15.00

Photobucket
Ages 3-6
e-book $15.00

Other available products include Math, Science, Travel, Daily Activity, and the Coordinator Handbook. This last e-book contains any information one might need to coordinate a swap

All e-books are pdf files and contain detailed instruction on how to assemble the activities. Everything that is needed for each fun lesson can fit in a gallon sized freezer storage bag (the zippered type is best) or a large envelope. Most of the activities and games can be used with supplies already on hand - no need to go out and spend a lot of money!

Both Preschool e-bags help to teach and reinforce skills such as numerical and alphabetical order, color, motor skill, hand & eye coordination, matching, sorting, patterns, observation, and puzzles.

I love the idea of having activity bags. They can be taken to church, the doctor's office, play dates, road trips and more. The possibilities are endless. One of the problems that I can  foresee is the storage of these activity bags. Right now, I have the ones I've assembled in a small storage tote, but as I prepare more and more of them, I might have a slight problem with storage as my space is very limited. It is best to laminate paper and card stock pieces so that they last longer. Right now, I don't have access to a laminator so I actually used clear packing tape on some of the pieces while others I put in a sheet protector. I plan on purchasing clear Contact paper for this purpose in the near future.

Some of the materials needed are things like crayons, fabric, glue, rice, card stock, plastic spoons, plastic canvas, and foam. Other materials are needed, of course, but most of the items are things that I have in my craft/school supply box!

As I mentioned in a previous post, I have been very ill for over a month. Due to that fact, I had to pick activities that were not as involved. The activites that we did do were very helpful in keeping my 2 and 4 year old occupied while I've been trying to recuperate. The Bean Bag Toss was a big hit and as we already had bean bags on hand, this required no extra work for me. An empty ice cream bucket and a round pool floatie was used as the target. The Boredom Buster was great as well and the kids were very excited to pick their own activity. They both like to dust and sweep and were thrilled when they chose those cards! My little ones love to draw with chalk so the Chalkboard Fun activity was perfect for them. While we do have a small chalkboard that will fit in the bag, my children used the big chalkboard that we have in our living room. My 4 year old used the guide to practice his letters and numbers. My 2 year old tried to copy him and also tried drawing shapes.

From e-book 2, we did the Bag O Buttons which involves the children sorting buttons by size, shape, and color. Since my youngest is 2 and this might be a choking hazard for her, only my 4 year old participated in this activity. Another activity was the Fruity Puzzles. I opted not to use the puzzle guide for this as my son loves working puzzles and is pretty good at it. He likes to figure things out for himself and did a great job!

From the Reading e-book, I chose the Solving Mazes activity and the Syllables activity which helps children learn words by breaking them up into syllables.

As I get well, I plan on incorporating more of these activities into our daily lessons. Having everything for each individual activity is great as clean-up is easy and everything is all in one place for the next time we want to use that activity.

I highly recommend Activity Bags! I think they are great!

Beloved Books- Review

Photobucket

One of our favorite pastimes is listening to old time radio shows. I love the wholesomeness of the stories, the anticipation, and the visualizing of the characters that are coming to life in the stories. There's not much out there like that anymore. It seems television prevails. If you watch much of it, you know as well as I do that there's not much in the way of "family" shows. For this reason, I was very excited to review the Sugar Creek Gang audio books on CD from Beloved Books.
Photobucket

From the website:
"In 1939, Paul Hutchens began writing a series of wholesome Christian adventure books for boys and girls.  Several years ago Paul Ramseyer was inspired to dramatize the book series for radio.  Now your family can own and enjoy the complete 36-book audio series... over 100 hours on 72 CDs!

These Sugar Creek Gang "Audio Adventures" are dramatically read straight from the original books.  Christian families LOVE this series because the gospel message is presented in such a simple, easy-to-understand style.  The whole series is, in fact, a discipleship journey... even parents who listen along witness the Holy Spirit working changes in their own hearts!
Families also enjoy the delightfully interspersed segments of nature study, poetry, hymns, and even science lessons... all skillfully woven into the fabric of the stories."

The Sugar Creek Gang Volume 1 series is available for purchase for $54.95 and includes FREE media rate shipping.

This volume of CDs contains the following stories:

The Swamp Robber
The Killer Bear
The Winter Rescue
The Lost Campers
Chicago Adventure
The Secret Hideout

A sample CD of of the story can also be purchased for $4.95 and includes free shipping as well! There are 6 volumes in total.

My son usually listens to radio shows before he goes to bed, but once he got his hands on the Sugar Creek Gang, he liked it so much that he listened to the stories throughout the day and was finished with volume 1 in 3 days. He loved it!

Unlike some audio books, I found the narrator very easy to listen to and the stories that came to life definitely fit the bill of being family friendly. As I write this, a fire is burning in our wood stove and the cold wind is whipping around outside, and it comes to mind that the audio books from Beloved Books would be the perfect accompaniment on a cold winter's evening. I highly recommend this series and I am looking forward myself to ordering more of their products. I am very grateful for this review opportunity!

Samson's Classrom- Review

Photobucket

As a member of the Schoolhouse Review Crew, I recently had the opportunity to review Samson's Classroom. Honestly, I didn't get the chance to review this product as much as I would have liked to due to being very ill the past several weeks. I am still battling bronchitis and a very bad sinus infection along with a couple of other things so I'm afraid this review might be a bit lacking, but I will do my best to tell you about the product and how we used it.

You can view the DEMO of the program to get a good idea of how the program works.

Complete PRICING information can be found on their website but the Home Plan for 1 student is $30 per year and the Family Plan for 4 users is $50.

I liked how the program included Lesson Plans and Worksheets like "Capital Clues" to help students learn upper and lowercase letters and "Trace Them All", to name a couple. All worksheets come up as a PDF file and are printable.

Photobucket

Categories include "Sight Words", "Spelling", and "Reading". Each Sight Words lesson is a game that was developed to help students master the 224 most commonly used words in the English language. Spelling includes over 5,000 words and counting and Reading helps students to analyze reading material and to draw their own conclusions.

The program has a dashboard and a scoreboard, both of which are great features to have in order to keep track of the student's progress and problem areas.

Here are a few screenshots of the program:

This program was actually a bit over my son's head. To be fair, he is still in preschool and just was not ready for much of the material. He soon became bored with the games that he did play, but again, I think it was because he wasn't ready for it. We have utilized other online programs that we liked much better for this stage of my son's education, but I think had he been a bit older this would have been a great program and a great fit for our family. The games lack the bells and whistles of some other programs, but the content is solid and I feel that when my son is ready, this program will be highly beneficial to him!
